1947 Midwest Corp, The Dagwood Sandwich Musical Toy in Original Box

1947 Midwest Corp, The Dagwood Sandwich Musical Toy in Original Box

Unusual tin litho toy based on the popular Blondie comic strip. Anyone reading the "funnies" back then knew that Dagwood's favorite food consisted of a huge stacked sandwich. It contained anything that wasn't nailed down in the "ice box". From this humble beginning the Musical Dagwood Sandwich was born. Best of all it comes with its original comic illustrated color box which really sets this toy apart from many character based toys..

The sandwich is completely tin litho with a working kazoo built into it. It still has the original vibrating material intact so it does work. The top and bottom were lithoed to resemble two slices of rye bread. Inside the extensively detailed lithography shows everything from tomatoes and pickles, to anchovies and olives. For safety the edges are all rolled metal.

The original box was illustrated by Chic Young, the strip's creator. The front and rear main box panels show a huge stuffed sandwich. The lower right corner includes a drawing of Dagwood "playing" his sandwich. The best thing about the box are the side panels. Each was illustrated differently and when read in order tells a story just like the funny papers. I've provided photo's of these four panels, in order, below.
